Native to Australiasia the cocaktoo family of birds has 21 species in it and is easily recognisable by their creast. Considered an exoctic parrot, cocaktoos are notible talkers often learning phrases with ease. This ability for talking is often balanced out by their ability to squawk loudy. They are large parrots and with this come large powerful beaks that can easily crack open the hardest of nuts.
Training cockatoos to talk is generally an easy talk with their inquisitive nature assisting in their training. Getting your cockatoo talking isnt as hard as it may seem as they generally enjoy the human interaction and are keen to be rewarded. There are a few points to consider when trying to get your cockatoo talking.
- Training any cockatoo is best done early in the morning when its at its most active
- Remove any distractions when training, inlcuding other people and animals
- Rewarding your cockatoo everytime it speaks the way you want (positive reinforcement)
- Speaking in a high pitched voice also helps many birds to catch on to mimicing
Once you have got the right environment setup as described above, you then need to make sure you saying the same word or phrase each day making sure you reward the right behaviour and not anything else.
Keeping this routine going will give you the best chance of getting your cockatoo talking. It is very important to keep your cockatoo mentally stimulate whilest you are not around, so giving it pleanty of toys and also leaving the radio on can help keep this large bird stimulated.
